Tax advice and bookkeeping services for freelancers

I have recently set up a sole proprietorship and I am looking for advice on the various forms of tax, insurance etc that I need to account for. As I understand it the following are the tax, social security and insurance items that are mandatory:

1. VAT

2. Income tax

3. Business Liability Insurance (as a client has asked for it)

4. Professional Liability Insurance (as the business is advice based)

5. Healthcare Insurance Premium (Zvw) - (which I understand is different to the mandatory health insurance)

Are there any obvious oversights in the list above for a consulting freelancer?

In addition, the nature of the business is relatively simple. Is there a decent software solution that I can use to manage my bookkeeping without paying an organisation to do so on my behalf (ideally something that accounts for the Dutch tax system, but has good English functionality).

Thanks in advance.

Hi DylanRi, and welcome at The Higherlevel forum

1. and 2. are Mandatory indeed

5. is the income-based part of the premium for the mandatory health insurance: you pay a nominal fee to the insurance company directly, and and incomebased part (Zvw) through the incometaxes.

3. and 4. are not mandatory by law, but can be required by clients and brokers. And of course they can be helpfull to lessen  your own business risks and the impact of claims to your personal or family assets

Yes,  a disability insurance and/or sickness provision.

To cut a long story short: please don't. The nature  of your business may be simple but bookkeeping and taxes are not.

Find yourself a good bookkeeper or administrative office to do this for you or at least help you with it: some of them let you work with their software to do things yourself, but with their supervision.

Hi Dylan,

Maybe the people from The Bookie can assist you.

I agree with Norbert don't because the Dutch Tax system isn't straightforward at all. Contrary to for example Estonia.
